We really weren't planning on doing any more of these basement recordings, at least for a while, at least until we had the chance to track some stuff in an actual studio. But we were fooling around and mic'd our instruments up during one of our practices just to see how we sounded. And low and behold, two of the songs we recorded right there live in the basement actually came out sounding not half bad, maybe even good enough to share. And in my book, 'maybe good enough' = 'good enough.'
The first one - Sassy Assassin - is a brand new song where we were trying to hit kind of a surf vibe to go with the spy theme, but we ended up just doing what came more naturally instead, which is fine. I figure we can always surf it up later if we really want to. As it is, it's one of my favorites to play live these days.
The second one - Fallout - is an old song originally recorded with a Casio beat for drums and put out on the Meet My Cat EP. We're pretty excited with how it's come together with the full drums, and I think the bass part that Alex plays on this one is totally killer.
When we recorded these, the drums were tracked using the same setup used on New Wave Milo - one mic for the kick drum and one for the snare - and these actually picked up the guitar amp as well. Bass guitar was on a third track and vocals on a fourth. Mixed and EQ'ed in Reaper. 1/2/3/4 done. Hope you enjoy.
